Guide on the School Expense Deduction for the Year-End Tax Adjustment

  • Due to the revision of Clause 4 of Article 59 [the Income Tax Law], the educational expenditures subject to tax deduction include the amount of school expenses paid individually such as “admission fee and tuition fee” and the amount of money spent for executing student loans (loans for students, general loans, loans for farmers and fishermen, etc.) provided by the Korean Student Aid Foundation from 2017 year-end tax adjustment.
  • Educational expenditure tax allowances that were not applied for the year-end adjustment due to the execution of student loans can be applied for one’s year-end adjustment for the year when he/she started to repay the student loans (not for his/her parents’ year-end adjustment).
  • The university sets the amount of money subject to school expense tax deduction based on the amount of money one has executed as his/her student loan and submits related documents to the National Tax Service. As for the loan repaid in the year, the Korean Student Aid Foundation submits related documents to the National Tax Service on its own (Please contact the Korean Student Aid Foundation for Information on the repaid details.)
